There are many neighbouring surf breaks to suit all types of abilities

Mangamaunu

Consistently rated as one of New Zealand’s finest right-hand point breaks, Mangamaunu delivers world-class waves. It is suited for surfers of all levels, the wave can peel for several hundred metres, offering an incredible ride while featuring an unforgettable backdrop of the Kaikōura mountain range.

Meatworks

Meatworks is one of Kaikōura’s most iconic surf breaks, due to it being a swell magnet. It has a dynamic reef and beach break offering fast, punchy lefts and rights. Ideal for intermediate to experienced surfers, it delivers fun, powerful waves with consistent swell and excellent conditions for great surf sessions.

Graveyards

Right below Mangamaunu Retreat, Graveyards is one of Kaikōura’s most accessible and versatile surf breaks. Nestled between the heavy-hitting Meatworks and the world-class Mangamaunu Point, it offers a more relaxed alternative—without sacrificing quality. Graveyards is known for being mellower than Meatworks, making it a great option for those chasing a quieter lineup, especially when the swell is firing. On smaller days it’s friendly and fun for beginners, while bigger swells deliver enough power and shape to keep experienced surfers stoked.

Kahutara

Kahutara is a premier break in Kaikoura. This right hand express train is best suited for upper-intermediate to expert surfers. It excels during big south swells, reaching heights of up to 10 feet. Barrels are abundant when the waves are rolling, but the drop-in is not for the faint-hearted.

Oaro

Oaro is a fun, laid-back beach break located at the southern end of the Kaikōura coastline. The beach is a mix of small stones, with waves breaking over a sandy bottom, creating multiple peaks along the shoreline. Surfers can pick from both right- and left-handers depending on the conditions. Known for its uncrowded lineup and relaxed vibe, Oaro is a great option for surfers of all abilities—from beginners finding their feet to experienced surfers looking for a cruisey session away from the crowds.
