Mangamaunu

The Mangamaunu Surf Break is located just below us and is ideal for surfers with intermediate to expert-level skills. This spot is well-known and popular, with waves breaking over a boulder bottom. The wave can peel off for several hundred meters, offering an incredible ride boasting an unforgettable backdrop of the Kaikoura mountain range.

Kahutara

If it weren't for Mangamaunu, Kahutara surf would likely be the premier break in Kaikoura. This spot is best suited for upper-intermediate to expert surfers. It excels during punchy winter swells, reaching heights of up to 10 feet. Barrels are abundant when the waves are rolling, but the drop-in is not for the faint-hearted.

Okiwi Bay

Beginners will enjoy this slow and easy-going beach break. These waves are perfect for a foam board. The high cliffs and mountains behind offer good protection from dominant northerlies, allowing regular groundswell sets to come through best at shoulder to head height.

“We felt completely relaxed surrounded by the mountains and beach near this property. The house was warm, cosy and fully stocked to have an amazing weekend getaway. Fresh eggs from the chickens and fruit from the trees were delivered which was extra nice. We had lots of advice on what waves to surf and had the best time exploring the area. We even saw whales and dolphins while drinking coffee in bed! Would highly recommend. ”

“If it was possible, we would give 6 stars as it’s truly one-of-a-kind in terms of location and property. Sitting atop a ridge by the beach, you can watch the waves, surfers and endless colours of the ocean. Slightly to the left, the beautiful mountain range meets the coast. The views are spectacular; it’s worth taking the time to watch the sunset, the dark night sky and an extraordinary sunrise. You can also access the beach, where there were few people and a couple of seals napping. We would absolutely love to return and highly recommend a stay in this idyllic part of the South Island. ”
